Lagos Welcomes Nigeria’s First Advanced Aesthetic Medicine Symposium
Medical professionals and industry stakeholders gathered in Lagos on Saturday for what organisers described as Nigeria’s first Advanced Aesthetic Technology Symposium.
The event, hosted by UK-based healthcare provider Medizone Limited, took place at The Wheatbaker Hotel in Ikoyi and brought together clinicians, clinic owners, and industry players to discuss developments in aesthetic medicine.
The day began with a closed scientific session attended by more than 70 clinicians, dermatologists, and medical practitioners from Nigeria and abroad. Participants were introduced to a range of technologies including Lumenis, Sofwave, UltraClear, Wonder, Hydrant facial, Classys, Fotofinder, Opatra London, and Mirapeel.
Speakers focused on the clinical use of these technologies across treatments such as laser hair removal, body sculpting, acne care, skin rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, and collagen stimulation. Organisers said the session was designed to provide training that many practitioners often seek outside the country.
The session ended with a raffle draw, with some attendees winning skin treatment packages valued at up to $3,600.
The evening session drew a wider audience beyond the medical field, with actress Genevieve Nnaji, media personality Daddy Freeze, and television host Eku Edewor among those present.
Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of Medizone Limited, Dr Hamza Arisekola Alao, stressed the need for standards as the sector expands.
“Care must always come before commerce. That is not simply a philosophy, it is a practice standard,” he said. “The expansion of aesthetic medicine across Africa presents opportunity, but growth without governance is a risk.”
He urged practitioners to prioritise patient safety, evidence-based practice, and long-term sustainability.
Also speaking, Freda Edewor Francis, Director at Medizone and Founder of Oasis Medspa, said the industry in Nigeria has evolved rapidly but still requires stronger support systems
“I have watched this industry grow from something people whispered about to something the entire continent is paying attention to,” she said. “The demand is real, and practitioners are ready, but the infrastructure has not kept pace. That needs to change.”
The event featured presentations from international and local experts, including Dr Pranav Pancholi, Dr Brooke Taylor, Dr Ravraj Sirha, Dr Benjamin White, and Dr Felix Avajah, President of the Association of Practitioners of Spa and Medical Aesthetics of Nigeria.
Industry data cited at the event shows that the Middle East and Africa aesthetics devices market is projected to reach $1.49 billion by 2033, with annual growth of about 11 per cent.
Organisers said Nigeria is expected to play a key role in that growth, citing its expanding middle class and growing number of trained professionals.
